My 20 gauge single shot Revelation shotgun is more painful to shoot than my 12 gauge Mossberg 590A1.

I didn't mention shotguns, With only 1 exception, I haven't had recoil management issues with shotguns.

Bozz, My only exception WAS ALSO a light 20 gauge!

Was on a shotgun only deer lease, tried 20 gauge slugs in a light gun.
Only tried it 1 time! Gave the slugs to anther hunter and switched to a heavier 12 gauge.

Man - shotguns. I've gotten bruised pretty badly by them, but mostly because of not shouldering it well in the heat of dove hunting. I've got an old 12 gauge SxS that is brutal - not sure why, but everyone who's shot it hates it.

Despite what folks say, it is virtually always a mistake to ‘’shorten’’ shotgun stocks. First off, the 14 to 14.5’’ l.o.p. used by many manufacturers was decided some 200 years back when the average man was around 5’6’’, and was never upped as Humans grew. Second place, if one is shortened for a boy or girl; they will grow out of it. Third, a shotgun is easier to shoot properly if longer than shorter l.o.p.

Those understood, we see so many with guns too short for their anatomy.

I learned from a too-short Sauer double, then from friends having custom English doubleguns ’’fitted’’ by makers.

Today, I follow my late Dad’s custom of .using removable leather shotgun butt pads, then space them, by adding layers of plastic foam or packing materials to get them up to the desired length.l

I used to get stockmakers to add lengthening ‘’spacers’’.b/t the rubber recoil pad and the wood, to extend the l o p.

Try longer; and enjoy the recoil reductions afforded. Your wingshooting WILL improve, too !

I hear you. My solution was to buy more shotguns. Got a 28 gauge O/U I love. I'd love to go to a person who can really fit shotguns. I've always been normal in most things - golf clubs, etc. I've found that, especially in wing shooting, the fitment of the gun is fairly important.

There are stock fitters available in San Antonio at the National Shooting Complex in the fall during the World Skeet Championship and during the Sporting Clays Championship. Country Gentleman is among the best.

Jess Briley Machine Works in West Houston/Katy has amazing facilities

Please visit there when in that area. It far surpasses any gun shop I have ever seen.

It is truly a Texas treasure.

One caveat: They take their time with big items, so don’t expect a rush-job.

If you want to reduce recoil... Simply shoot with a suppressor. A well made suppressor will reduce as much as 70% recoil. For those of us in the industry its a serious concern. I know multiple people with microfractures in the neck and spine from years of working in this industry. I also know a guy who took a straight pull bolt from a laboratory gun that had hundreds of thousands of rounds on the action, through the face and into his jaw. Not pleasant to say the least. Recoil does matter. Also as an instructor, one of the first things I have to do with new students is get them to learn recoil control. Stop flinching, stop anticipating. All of this we solve very easily with suppressors.

The VERY WORST gun to shoot for me is the Seacamp .380
Its not the recoil its the "bite" in the trigger finger from the trigger guard.
I've had other "manly men" shoot it and its for one shot only before they put it down.
    Horrible design.

Try a 45-70 on a TC Contender with a 500 gr RNpb over a load of Accurate 5744 (29.5 gr). After 3 or 4 of those you begin to achieve true enlightenment.
I had one of those barrels for a short time. ;)
Only one I hated more was a 10" 300 Savage barrel. That thing would twist right out of your hand if you didn't hang on.

If you ever come to a TGT meet and you have a chance, one of the members has a makarov that is by far the worst gun I've ever shot.

Mickey's river bottom range sold out before I opted in mid December.
    Never happened before.
I'm looking for a new local range where machineguns are allowed and no 21 year old telling me how its done.
I have lots of cool guns and don't mind sharing as long as everyone brings their own ammo.

I don't know about dallas gun ranges. Probably private ranges allow MGs but I wouldn't know which clubs do or don't. I go to a range west of Kileen that allows machine guns.

I was thinking about people shying away from guns because of it
When I met my wife she didn't know anything about guns and was recoil shy. I let her shoot a .22 pistol several times and she liked it so I had her try a 9mm. She said "oh no, that's too much" and didn't want to shoot anymore. Later I showed her a video of a 9yo girl doing a run and gun and told her that little girl was shooting the same ammo she said was too much. Cured her of all recoil shyness

If I have someone apprehensive about recoil, before we even goto the range I have them hold some object like a gun and smack the end of it. I tell them that's what recoil feels like. I'll remind them that the bang might surprise them, but the felt recoil really isn't that big of a deal.
