    So Toyota is testing subscription-based remote start from your keyfob. They want $80/year, but an aftermarket "alarm and immobilizer bypass module" can listen for the key's message, and then transmit the same "missing" remote start messages on the CAN bus to remote start your car. Cost wise, you're in the black by the time your car note is up, without the hassle of a subscription. If you have pushbutton start, you can also add remote start to a car that didn't come with the option enabled. If people knew the option existed, of course.

    Today, those messages are not really encrypted or obfuscated (much) so it's reasonably easy to extend or recover lost functionality. Going forward it will be a cat and mouse game as manufacturers lock things down much more in the name of 'security.' If it gets too bad, and cars can't be repaired for reasonable amount of money, those brands will see their resale values plummet and the manufacturer reputation tank with it. People may not know or care about car tech, but they are very sensitive to repair costs.

    Toyota is testing the waters, and the blowback has been pretty swift and harsh. They thought $8/mo. or $80/year was within peoples' comfort zone. People expect their car to keep doing the things they did when the bought them, and consider something broken if it doesn't. It's going to be interesting to see how this plays out.

    BMW got a lot of crap too when they decided that Apple CarPlay integration was a subscription feature too, and they reversed course.

    The reality is supporting the "right to repair" laws are important. Very important.

    Had an interesting dream last night... My Bronco order came in, but when I went to the dealer to pick it up they had slapped an AMV on it doubling the price. I was raising hell about it, but they weren't budging. The GM of the dealer actually told me, "Some other idiot will pay it."

    Someone who overheard me cussing the dealer said, "Follow me over to the Dodge dealer, I have something to show you." So of course I follow this mysterious stranger to the Dodge dealer...

    Turns out that particular dealer was having a special where if you buy two cars off their lot you get a big discount. We worked up a deal where I was buying a brand new red base model Ram 1500 and a used white Challenger Hellcat for the same price the other dealer was trying to take me for on the Bronco.

    I was really hemming and hawing at this because I didn't really want either, and especially didn't want a red truck and a white car... but the next thing I know in my dream I'm driving a red Ram 1500 and pulling into my driveway where a white Hellcat sits.

    It's just a dream... relax.

    I, too am truck/suv shopping now.

    My long time Ford "service advisor" recently bought a new Bronco, then moved over to the Jeep dealership in the next city,

    Since I drive both F150 & Jeep Wrangler, that's fine for me.

    He showed me the loaded Bronco. I've studied the specs.

    My take: The new Bronco has lots of theoretical advantages but is plagued with new-design glitches and inadequate engine choices. Jeeps are more rugged, have known traits, are easily worked-on, have massive manufacturer & aftermarket options, and are known to hold value well.

    OTOH, Ford is offering the really long-term MANUFACTURER'S extended repair warranty, which has proven a wonderful bargain on my 11+ year old 4WD F-150, which has 110K miles and over a year remaining on the extended FACTORY warranty.

    IDK about others, but I have been massively disappointed with aftermarket repair warranties.

    With the Ford extended warranty, no matter what happens, the Ford dealer fixes it for a flat $100 per incident. One time around 6 years old, the F150's main computer went-out, a $3,400.00 repair. It cost me $100 for a complete new system.

    Since Ford decided to extend this warranty one more year, I'm going to defer replacement of vehicle.

    Te Jeep still looks better. . . . . .

    My brother just finished a 73 bronco and did not go restomod and the bill for parts is crazy he did all the body work mechanical work paint and electrical all himself.

    To me, beyond powertrain choices, the biggest advantage the Jeep has is a solid front axle.

    But for most buyers, they’ll see this as a disadvantage compared to Bronco’s IFS.

    Exactly, let the Ford IFS prove itself first. OTOH, I've driven Jeeps for so long that I don't see the axle as a real problem.

    For years, I hunted the really rough country along the Rio Grande near Big Bend.

    My memories are of shiny big SUV's towing old Jeep CJ's going-in and of the old Jeeps towing the shiny big SUV's on the way back out. . . . . . . .

    Yeah, if it’s an everyday driver then the Bronco probably would be better. For play or as a backup vehicle, Jeep would be better. If nothing else because most of the faults are known, and as has been said, there’s a vast aftermarket

    Did you ever get your Bronco? My wife put in a reservation for one last year a Black Diamond package 2.3 with 10speed transmission (auto). Aside from a few hicups, been a decent driver. It will probably never see anything but pavement.
