I have quite a few healthy people in my life. Yet I managed to get 60 lbs overweight. Much of it was sodas and beer.

I quit drinking Cokes and lost 8 lbs the first month, then more after that. I went cold turkey cuz I’m a Coke junky. Quit after my third bout with kidney stones.

Dated a lady that was super healthy. She drank a glass of water (20-32oz) as soon she got up. Had another before lunch. Another before dinner and another before bed. I started doing the same. Yeah I get up at night to pee. But I would anyway.

With going gluten free and drinking water I lost 45 lbs. I feel better than I have in 20 years. Added exercise (mostly bike riding) to get to the 45 lbs off.

I remember quitting Cokes about 25 years ago. I was drinking, I estimate, about 40 per day. It was amazing how fast 75 pounds fell off.

I've fallen off the wagon, though, and usually have a Coke a day. If I could ever break that habit...:(

ETA: I have improved levels of hope, though. HEB has, for the first time in over a year, started stocking their plain cola. At only 20 calories per can, I can usually substitute it for Coke and not feel terribly deprived. The last time I went fully Coke-free for a few months, it was those HEB substitutes that made it possible. I even quit them after a while.

There was a lot of input from people who had a vested interest in bread sales when the idea of a “food Pyramid” was being developed.

Orange juice was never a thing until someone needed to sell more oranges. Turns out one of Sigmund Frueds family members (nephew or some shit) was really good at creating large scale behavioral changes. He had a hand in a lot of similar and successful campaigns.

If it came from one of Frued's family members you know that there was a motive, there for sure. That family is nuts.

Sugar is a weight loss killer. Amazing how much goes away with just cutting it out of your diet.
That is so true! I know too many people who don't understand why they can't loose weight. When you tell them to track there sugar intake it usually shocks them. These are usually people who eat fairly healthy as well.

40 is a ton! I was having 4-8 a day. I have had none since my last kidney stones. Its been a few years now, and I no longer crave them.

There are some decent sugar free cookies (they use one of the sugar substitutes).

    Agree to disagree. Lol.

But I’ve never had a decent store bought cookie of any kind. Spoiled by a grandfather who really new how to bake and have his recipes.

Yeah, and it's not an overstatement. I would gulp down 4+ before breakfast. During work hours, I kept them in a fridge under my desk and went through more than 2 12-packs during each workday. When I got home, I'd polish off more than one 12-pack. Add in the ones I bought when eating out or refilling and the total averaged more than 40 a day.

It's tough to get your weight up to over 600 pounds but I did. In my heart of hearts I believe I went WAY beyond 600 pounds but I was never weighed at my heaviest so I can't say for sure. All I'll own up to is "somewhere over 600 pounds."

Now that I've lost over 350 pounds, that last 100 is turning out to be very tough to lose for an old man like me. And all my efforts have come way too late. The diabetes and the joint problems I created when I was 30 can never be fixed. I can get better but I'll never be without pain and other complications.

If I could tell my young self just one thing it would be "It's a tragedy to live your life without experiencing the things a healthy body can do. Don't make that mistake."

A few years back the folks in the office where I worked decided to have a diet contest. Everyone put in some money and the person with the highest percentage of weight loss got the pot. A few people dropped out within 48 hours. Most people lost some weight, but were never in serious contention for the money. It came down to 2 guys who battled hard, and they were both about to pass out from dehydration when the weigh-in was finally done. (Remember, "a pint to the pound is good the year round". A pint of water weighs 1 pound.)

The interesting part about the whole thing was that even though everyone did different diets, there were some things in common amongst those who lost weight.
    1. Drink water. Lots of water. Many times when you feel hungry - and esp. when you don't quite know what you want - you're really just getting dehydrated.
    2. Exercise. Seems like an easy one, but the guys who lost the most didn't do marathons or join gyms. They just made a point of moving. They would get out and walk during lunch or after work.
    3. Stop eating fast food. I remember hearing a doctor tell a cardiac patient that he needed to change his diet. The patient asked if he could get a hamburger or something when he was traveling. The doctor said, you can EAT fast food, just don't LIVE ON fast food. The patient asked which foods were better and the doc replied, "If it comes in a bag or a box, it's bad for you." The worst part about fast food is that a lot of it contains sugar in the form of high fructose corn syrup (HFCS). The stuff is extremely cheap and tastes sweeter than plain granulated sugar (sucrose). Among other things, it causes food to brown nicely, so it's added to stupid things you wouldn't expect to have extra sugar like hamburger buns and french fries.

As a pancreatic cancer survivor, I can't drink "regular" sodas. I have been amazed at how much sugar is in one can of it. We had a guy at work that was a type-1 diabetic with an automatic insulin pump and he neglected to eat lunch one day. He walked past me in the hall, then collapsed from low blood sugar. Fortunately, the lead safety guy was nearby and knew of the guy's condition. He bought a Coke and gave the guy a couple of sips. He stood up and was fine. I was shocked - just a few sips and he went from extremely low blood sugar to being able to walk away! Holy crap, there's a ton of sugar in that stuff!!

high fructose corn syrup ... causes food to brown nicely ...
This is one of the reasons that having an all-you-can-eat Chinese buffet near me is absolute death to my attempts to lose weight. Luckily, I have to drive quite a distance from home if I want to go to one so it's not an everyday thing. But, damn, the amount of sweetener on shrimp and broccoli and lots of other things that don't need sugar is just stupefying.

I would say dont have that first back surgery. Once they start they never stop. They are like the Mafia in that way, just when you think your out, they drag you back on the operating table.

I guess I had no choice as I had serious instability issues but waiting a few more years would have been better.

As for soda, I drink diet. About a 6 or sometimes a 12 pack a day. No kidney issues.

As for weight never had a problem till the back surgeries. I would gain 50 lbs then lose it. Gain 70 then lose it. Got up to over 350, like you probably more as I quit weighing myself.

I'm right about 200lbs now. Some mornings 195 to 198 and some 204 to 207. You can swing 10 pounds in a day or 2 depending on fluids regularity etc. At 6ft still probably 10lbs over but under the 215 I was back when lifting weights. I could run a 5 min mike then too so it wasnt exactly too much weight. Probably too much weight and weight lifting for the back in hindsight but the magic 8 ball was a bit vague on those insights back then. Lol

See the doc on monday to remove one more of the diabetic meds. I will be down to just victoza as long as the A1c stays under 7.

Victoza goes generic this year thank god. It's a 1000 dollars a month.

Seriously? It seems most endos have tried to switch their patients to the newer Ozempic. I take it. It's more convenient. But it's also more expensive for me, given my drug coverage.

If Victoza could be had relatively inexpensively, I'd switch back to it in a heartbeat.

Thank you very much for that info.

The grandson was a Mountain Dew addict. Lots of sugar and caffeine. Then one day he developed kidney stones. He drinks nothing but water now.
