Help me out here, I've having trouble understanding your responses.

Why on earth do you think that I would join a Texas-centric firearms forum to seek recommendations for dystopian liberal bastions to move to when I am trying to escape one now?
Just yanking your chain. Although Oklahoma north of OKC will cut your commute to visit kids by a huge margin. The traffic on I35 through Dallas can be absolutely horrendous.

All new guys, especially from traditionally lefty controlled areas get their chain yanked a good bit here. If you survive the hazing its a fun place to hang out, virtually of course.

I cannot help you on the north Texas thing - we relocated from the PNW just a bit under a year and a half ago to warm, wonderful SE Texas. Being one to loathe cold weather, snow, or anything resembling such - you could probably get me to move as north as Oklahoma, but it would take a shit-ton of money to do it.

Honestly Oklahoma isn't bad - they had constitutional carry before Texas did, they're still a solidly conservative state, and aside from the odd gay tiger keeper with a shitty roadside zoo, tornadoes, and my family still at large in Oklahoma it ain't so bad. If being close to the grand babies is a priority, somewhere in Oklahoma would really cut down on that commute so you'd see them more.

Wyoming - I've only driven thru a few times, and visited Yellowstone for a few days. Gorgeous country. Too f'in cold for me to ever want to live there 8 months out of the year.

Texas Monthly (a magazine) once ran an article on the 10 worst jobs in the state of Texas. The two I remember: the guy who pushes reflective buttons down into the fresh, hot, black tar of a newly paved highway - bent over at the waist all day in the Texas summer heat. The other bad job was being a full-time resident of Wichita Falls.
    I remember that article !
The bad job I recall: chicken-sexer.

If you like lots of traffic and big weather swings as well as sky high property taxes live in the Dallas Metro Area. In all honesty Oklahoma is a better choice due to visiting Kansas. If you want a big city then OKC or Tulsa should fit the bill. Or try Kansas City. Both Kansas and Missouri are constitutional carry and pretty conservative.

Having moved from Commifornia I can tell you that no state income tax is nice, but property taxes are right up there. So I suggest you look at things like taxes and quality of life. If you are going to be retired or working from home then you have many choices but if you will still be out there collecting a paycheck your choices are diminished. Just my input.

Since you are not a Texan, I can understand your perplexity at some of the comments here. Texans are mostly a hospitable bunch (with some exceptions of course) but there has been a mass influx of people moving here over the last few years because they are fleeing areas where quality of life has been destroyed by liberal left wing government control. Many of those people were so ingrained in their way of viewing political issues that they still believe and vote as liberals. They didn't see that the cesspools they were leaving were created by things they generally agreed with. Naturally, we don't want people here in Texas that may continue to support insanity.

Said another way, I have a friend who lives in Glen Rose. He moved there from Houston when he retired. According to him there are two kinds of people in Glen Rose. Those that are from Glen Rose, and MIBs. What is a MIB?

    Moved In Bastards

That holds true for a lot of places in Texas. And some of us are getting tired of the MIBs outnumbering us Texans.

All that being said, if you embrace our values you are welcome here.

    "Embracing Texas values."

That's one of the biggest reasons I would move to Texas, we share some very basic, common values.

    "Yanking my chain."

I understand that very well, in fact I may be "guilty" of that in my home forum. If so, then I owe @RoadRunner a beer when I get down there. But none of that cheap stuff. Gotta be Coors Light or better.

Considering the commute to kids, grandkiddlins and such, somewhere from central to northern Oklahoma might work out better for you.

By the way, you didn't say whether or not you plan to live in town, or out in the country. That might help.

Good point. The only reason I mentioned Wichita Falls was to define a potential area.

I went to school at Sheppard AFB in 1981. Was towards the end of summer into the late fall so I only caught part of the extreme heat. Coming out of the handball court was like getting out of the pool. Also met my second wife there (something I will NOT hold against Texas).

The best thing I could do would be to take a month long vacation in Texas to look at various areas but that may be rather difficult to schedule. Once I am free it might be a rush to get out of here and make it permanent.

Oh, almost forgot, I do not want to live in a big city, would rather be in the country or a small town. But near enough to good medical faciliies and hopefully a military base.

It is called sarcasm, which doesn't translate well in print OR they think you are just another damn yankee.

Might want to go with Lone Star or better.
