Until 1979, it was the Taiwan Nationalist government that claimed it was the sole government of China and was recognized as such by the United States. Carter's reversal of that doctrine was tantamount to treason, but the Nationalist government's claim was weak considering it had lost the mainland 30 years prior. Why would all that debt default if they go into Taiwan ? The US has always agreed there is only one China so why shouldn't they go in to their own country and not have everyone default on what debt they owe China?
They know that half of this country would be strongly against us doing anything militarily in Taiwan, and probably would lead to more "peaceful" demonstrations in our city streets. I'm sure they love to sit back and watch us implode.

The reality is that money is a bigger driver than their so-called national pride. Right now, China is making incredible amounts of money and taking over the world economy by lending money to everybody - esp. the USA - and thus "owning" us via debt. If they go to war, ALL THAT DEBT WILL DEFAULT. Ouch.
I don't remember the particulars but we have a law on the books requiring us to aid Taiwan. Of course, with our government as it has become, I am not sure the law makes a bit of difference.
FIFY...late in the Biden/Harris administration. There's no way in hell those two could manage awarPopsicle stand.
