When pickup gun racks disappeared. Auto wasn't your home? Enforced 1871 law? Range at Preston & belt line had problem with LE. Maybe settled in court case? Vaguely remember news coverage in mid 70s. Hand gun in auto was 'illlegal' unless 'in ' trunk.

"Any person carrying on or about his person, saddle, or in his saddle-bags, any pistol, dirk, dagger, slung-shot, sword-cane, spear, brass-knuckles, bowie-knife, or any other kind of knife manufactured or sold for the purpose of offense or defense,"
"shall be guilty of a misdemeanor"
" shall forfeit to the county the weapon or weapons so found on or about his person "
Never changed until 1995 or so and your horse is like your auto. Cost to go to court to reclaim your weapons - $$.
When I was in Corpus after Carla, LE would put all confiscated weapons on a barge and shove them overboard into the gulf.
Indiana was first state to issue LTC, illegal prior.
joke all you want, twas the way it was.

Can you highlight the part where it say you must have your handgun and ammo separated and in locked boxes? Like you claimed in 119?

"Yes, Texas did have the inaccessable (locked) container/trunk/unloaded/etc"

1995? No, my first academy was in 1983 and that wasn't in the code. You are going to have to source that...

My father had a holster that was designed to strap on the steering column of his 1956 Ford pickup truck (which was completely visible and not covered with plastic). He could strap it on to the column in just a minute or two and have a perfect place to draw from while driving (if necessary).

    Correct, my error.
Interesting, this thread shows the majority of gun owners do not know gun laws. Or care! And in the past, LE didn't much care either, especially in rural areas. They don't matter until you get in trouble. Actually after some past speeding tickets in Tx, no LE even asked if gun in car - probably changing now.
To the original OP, IMHO, If it is unloaded and NOT accessible to auto occupants, no problem. Trigger lock if kids with you.

Last time I was asked if I had any weapons In the vehicle I had already been confronted with the "I smell Marijuana". Which was not true unless that officer had been toking up prior to pulling me over. Anyway the infringement took place. I was 17 and didn't attempt to dispute it. Probably good I didn't because he looked pissed before he walked up to my window. I later found out I shut down his daughter in school. Not sure if that was related to my experience, but It made me realize not to trust cops or women.
