    Also where the term "scuttlebutt" comes from. The scuttle butt held drinking water, so it was today's equivalent of hanging around the water fountain (sorry for the digression)
    Ship's drinking water used to come from a scuttled butt(cask). Scuttlebutt is still a term used for a drinking fountain on ships, also a term used for rumors.

    And if one chooses to believe everything that is available on the internet (I do not), the place to stack cannon balls on a sailing warship, was called a brass monkey.

    It is true, they were made of brass so they would not spark and set off black powder exploding shells, powder spilled on the deck or elsewhere. They kept the cannonball from rolling around lioae on the deck.
