    And if one chooses to believe everything that is available on the internet (I do not), the place to stack cannon balls on a sailing warship, was called a brass monkey.

    It is true, they were made of brass so they would not spark and set off black powder exploding shells, powder spilled on the deck or elsewhere. They kept the cannonball from rolling around lioae on the deck.

    Both true. Also the phrase “Cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey” comes from the differing contraction rates between iron and brass. When it got extremely frigid, the canon balls would roll off the brass monkeys
