Rural Texas Dollar General but I suspect it is system wide.

Old grey-haired cashier asked old grey-haired County Constable customer for ID to buy cigarettes. They addressed each other by their 1st names.

Saw it at one Friday evening. Corporate policy I’m sure. Probably doing it for the camera to protect their job.

I was waiting in line at a convivence store in North Carolina. The very old man in front of me was buying a 6 pack. The clerk made him show his ID. I guess the law in NC requires that you can prove your age at the time of purchase. The clerk told me that she would get fined and fired if he didn't have proof on him.

I see this at Walgreen's when purchasing beer or wine. I'm a gray haired old man and they card me every time. Also, their 18 yo clerks can't sell alcohol. They have to be 21.

I used to work for Dollar General. It is system wide. Yes it's stupid, the cashier thinks it's stupid, and the manager most likely thinks it's stupid. Failure to ask for an ID is pretty much grounds for termination, so the store employees don't really have a choice. Corporate was extremely paranoid about stuff like that, and employee theft. There was a camera watching the register constantly (more so for the employee, not the customer), and honestly I wouldn't be surprised if there was a mic too.

The 80 YO old ladies used to get a kick out of me asking for an ID. The middle aged women, not so much. I don't know why, but that age group of women were probably the most unpleasant people to deal with out of everyone who shopped there. Not all of them mind you, but more than enough to notice.

Around here law enforcement will send in a person to buy alcohol. This person will look older but be underage. If the clerk sells the alcohol, the clerk themselves gets a hefty fine and the store gets a hefty fine and their ABC license revoked.
This has led to everyone getting ID checked, corporate policy or not. I think the fine to the clerk is $500 so they check every ID to cover their butts. Everyone around here knows to have your ID out when it's time to pay.

    Out here by the lake!
Would you rather deal with their stupid policy or drive somewhere else to buy your cigarettes?

I spent 22 years selling beer & wine on my seasonal job. TABC loved to target the place for many reasons, but mainly because they are revenue generators first & foremost in my mind. I would tell the wenches if they got popped for serving underage I would throw them under the bus. Wouldn't hire anyone without a TABC certificate. TABC expects every establishment to have an alcohol policy. My guess a tobacco policy is no different.

Ever wounder what happen to cigarette vending machines?

About every 10 years my corporate employer requires every employee to work 2 weeks in a store. This includes all state permits for age restricted products, food handling, etc. It's been 3 or 4 years but I recall the fine being around $250 for selling cigs to an underage customer. That fine is on the clerk who probably makes $1-$3 over minimum wage and not the store manager.

Back in the early 2000s I was working in the store and carded a guy who wanted a flavored cigar. He handed me his Texas DL which had expired a few months earlier. It showed he was of age but I refused to sell. An expired DL is NOT an approved form of identification per the state. He then walked backed to his buddy, whispered some stuff and the buddy put his stuff on the counter then requested the same flavored cigar. I refused him based on the belief this was now a 2nd party purchase for a person without proof of age. The first guy cussed me up and down. I just smiled and asked him to leave as I was dialing 911.

I can't say I learned too much working in the stores considering I work on non-store IT sytems. But I did learn to appreciate clerks who barely make minimum wage and must adhere to corporate and legal policies. The vast majority of customers are great but it only takes one person to f$ck up an entire day.

I haven't seen it but have heard of stores carding everyone in a group and denying a sale if a member can't prove they are old enough.

I may have an issue with this if I am denied a sale because a younger family member is with me.
