The people who want total government are aware of the consequences referenced. They know they will have to kill or imprison roughly 25% of the population in order to accomplish their goals, and they find that acceptable. Taking any sort of action against establishment powers is going to be counter productive until more people start thinking critically about their liberty.
Below is the part of the article I found most interesting because we see a lot of this even on this forum."I would point out that the communists were very careful and deliberate in ensuring that the actions of the internal police were made valid through law and rationalized as a part of “class struggle.” Such laws were left so open to interpretation that literally any evil committed could later be vindicated. Man-made law is often a more powerful weapon than any gun, tank, plane or missile, because it triggers apathy within the masses. For some strange reason, when corrupt governments legalize their criminality through legislation or executive decree, the citizenry suddenly treats that criminality as legitimate and excusable."

The quote in my signature line reminds me to avoid group think in an echo chamber where we all think/talk alike. Normalcy bias is not our friend either. However, with history as our guide, I can affirm that your commentary is on target. Lord Acton's "Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely." is also absolutely correct. However, that which cannot be sustained won't. Tyranny is one of those unsustainable entities. Sure, it stinks while it exists, but it can't last forever.
As for the quest for legality in everything the goverenment does, my "aha" moment came years ago when I heard news reports of Congress relying on a team of lawyers to help them craft some piece of legislation. Here was the highest body of legislators in the land, who are literally The Law-Makers, a high percentage of whom were lawyers themselves, who were using even more lawyers to add to the burdensome regulations already corralling the sheeple. Just because Congress (or SCOTUS) makes something legal it doesn't make it right, even if done in the name of democracy. For example, many in the US now think that same-sex marriage is an acceptable practice. No, it is merely legal.
