Because police departments would never skirt or outright break state law.

Considering the ramifications, I highly doubt any Texas agencies or departments would be so brazen to conduct DWI checkpoints knowing it is against state law; but go ahead and believe whatever that asshat says and don't bother checking any of his facts...

Please show in quotes where I said I believed him. If you can I will give you pick of my safe. Since you can not, just STFU.
and as far as ramifications for breaking the law? Please, ask Michael Morton if he thinks Ken Anderson was severely punished.

There are really very few consequences outside of losing your job if you embarrass the department.

They're not DWI checkpoints. They're Insurance Checkpoints. We need them to catch illegals and lock up hit and run drivers.

    Saltyag2010,

And IF a driver at an "insurance checkpoint" is drinking/drunk, you "let them walk"???

    BIGPAPIGREG,

What I'm saying is that the LE agencies have "re-named" DWI-checkpoints to try to get around the law. = Judges, who value "the spirit of the law" won't be fooled & "insurance checkpoints" will also be struck down.

It shouldn't be. The name was changed and procedure is similar.

They have these late at night/early morning in bad parts of town. Not highways. They piss people off really good around here and I like pissing illegals and people who don't have a license off. If you're not supposed to drive it gets you and your vehicle off the road.

Id rather keep government interference on the road than in my house/work/church/school/tv/radio. I honestly think they should only handle the roads, military, police.

    Saltyag2010,

On a recent election day, I was "caught up in" one of these checkpoints at 0545hrs., while I was enroute to set-up a polling place for the election.
(I'm a county election judge & needed to get to the polling place by 0600 to set up the polling place. - The roadblock was less than a mile from the polling place.)

The two of us just sat there (FUMING) for well over 45 minutes & when we finally got to the checkpoint, they took one look at my POV (with the retired Army sticker) & waved us on through. - As a result of that NEEDLESS DELAY, we were late opening the polls & I "got blessed out, but good" by "a county big-shot" for being LATE.

I later found out from a buddy, who is a deputy sheriff, that ONE person was apprehended for any violation (an expired state inspection sticker) AND 8 LEO were "tied up" for well over 3 hours doing the roadblock.
(That's a considerable amount of taxpayer's $$$ wasted for a really small positive result.)

    just my OPINION, satx

This, even if they were constitutional they are still a huge waste of resources for rather dismal results and waste people's time (numerous studies have come to this exact conclusion). We are much better off with traditional enforcement of traffic laws that only target people actually doing something wrong. It's akin to the dismal results we get out of the TSA.

They seem to have it figured out in corpus. If it doesn't work don't use it. 12-3AM is different than 5-8AM.

Not everywhere has the problems that are solved by "insurance checkpoints". It works when you have areas where a higher amount of cars aren't registered, don't have insurance, and don't have insured/licensed/American drivers.

    zincwarrior,

I wonder what over 24 man-hours of SAPD time cost the taxpayers???? = A "goodly pile of bucks" is my GUESS, to catch one "inspection sticker violation".
(The driver probably didn't even know that it was expired.)

    Mission accomplished.
