There's probably a way you can firewall off Cortana so that you can still search locally, but it can't phone out.
Nope. You'll need to install either Classic Shell, or Start Menu 8, to have the search function.

Search, is now "hard-coded" into Cortana. Disable Cortana, lose search.

If I wanted free malware, I would just start cruising non-mainstream porn sites using IE with all my anti-virus and firewall protections turned off. It would at least be more pleasurable than watching/clicking the install screens for Windows 10.

I really want to build another gaming desktop with a Nvidia 1080 but Winblows 10 is putting me off, even with the scripts. I'll just stick with OS X until I figure something else out. Maybe a Steam OS box. I have Win 10 on my wife's box and it never gets used since she has my 2011 macbook when the retinas first came out. Luckily other alternatives are coming around and with open platform engines, OS X, Linux/Steam OS are becoming more viable options now.

Sounds good. I'm guessing you can switch between VMs as easily as you can with type2 hypervisors?

Yep. Although I'm not entirely sure if this is technically accurate, as I'm not all that experienced with hypervisors, it's effectively a type 1 that runs a bit like a type 2. Anyone feel free to correct me if that's not right. This is by far the best overview I've found on Qubes:

Ah ok... It's not really like a normal hypervisor at all. You could get the same basic functionality out of something like Sandboxie, but I was impressed when he started demonstrating the VM manager. It looks pretty useful.

When making any upgrade from an existing OS to a new one, the person upgrading really needs to read what changes, what works, and what doesn't. This has been something that the IT industry has done for decades and is now trickling down to the consume level. Most of the time, the OS will perform those checks for you, I don't recall Windows 10 doing that but it probably does. If you know it's going to be a problem ahead of time though, search for a workaround. That doesn't make it right, but computers and their associated software to require some effort on the users part some of the time or most of the time if your an engineer where the F Word becomes a comma in your sentences.

Slashdot reader Noryungi writes: Qubes OS certainly has an intriguing approach to security, but a newly discovered Xen vulnerability allows a hacker to escape a VM and own the host. If you are running Qubes, make sure you update the dom0 operating system to the latest version.

Well, I didn't up grade. So all day I've been getting notices of possible viruses. Did they downgrade my Windows 8.1 or whatever? Assholes!

I didn't upgrade either but haven't heard a peep about it. Not being funny, but maybe you have a virus or something else going on. What are and where are the warnings coming from?

For the record I did find a workaround, but each time I tried it, something else entirely wouldn't work. Fortunately I found a solution for Windows 8:8.1 http://startisback.com

I've got a machine that Win 10 refuses to upgrade. Claims the cpu has no NX (no-execute) capability. But it is wrong about that.

Tried again last night - you can still get the free upgrade from Microsoft's site - just claim you use accessibility features and they let you upgrade.

    No Rush.

    Some loads if Win7 aren't upgradable. I have a Toshi Tecra that won't upgrade because it's Win7Pro.
I have another computer that won't upgrade, because of too many incompatable tweaks.
