I was trying to think of a happy medium for HD ammo that would be a descent stopper, but have minimal over penetration risk. Right now I use a Multi-Defense Buckshot seen below in my 12ga. What do you use/recommend?

My 870 is loaded with 00 buck. There's just the two of us in the house, so penetration isn't too much of a factor. Plus it's effective on hogs at 40-50 yards. I think have I killed 4 hogs in my front yard with 00 at 40+yards.

Cor-Bon 115g DPX for my Glocks
Corbon 180g DPX for my .380s
Corbon 62g DPX for my Mini-14

I like Cor-Bon products as you can see. I don't use a shotgun for HD.

Reduced recoil(so they say) 00 buck stays in my pistol grip Mossy 500. Although, I will only shoot that gun if my life did depend on it. It rocks my wrist everytime I shoot it.

My 870 is my dad's Wingmaster from 1968. I had to trade my 1973 870 (it cost $93 in 1973) to get it. It's made of real materials and shoulder fired, but 00 with 12 pellets still has pretty good recoil.

Do you see any reason NOT to?

The reduced recoil, yes, but only if using an autoloader for SD as it may not cycle properly (it will in my 930SPX but that isn't always the case). If you can handle full recoil, then I would use that because it means more charge behind the shot.

I would use the PDX if you wanted the power of a slug with a little forgiveness on accuracy.

    Regular ol' 2 3/4" 00 Buckshot.

I don't see any reason to use "reduced recoil" loads or any of that fancy PDX1 business.

For me those low recoil rounds are more comfortable to shoot, so when I purchase 00 I get those. I do have the old skool 00 and slugs as well.

If my life is on the line, I don't think I'll be worried about how much my shotgun recoils.
