Update on Jaywalking Jogger Arrest: Police Chief Says At Least Cops Didn’t Sexually Assault Her

A few days ago, a woman jogging on Guadalupe Street near the University of Texas at Austin was stopped by police for jaywalking and then arrested for failure to provide ID. Photographs and video of the incident were taken by onlooker Chris Quintero.
That woman has since been identified as 24-year-old Amanda Jo Stephen. The video and photos of cops manhandling her went viral, and public outrage ensued.

On Saturday, Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo held a press conference to discuss the incident.
    Here’s what he said:
“In other cities there’s cops who are actually committing sexual assaults on duty, so I thank God that this is what passes for a controversy in Austin, Texas!”
That’s right, folks! At least Austin police aren’t groping or raping jaywalkers! Hey, Stephen should be REALLY thankful she wasn’t snatched up while jaywalking in NYC – she might have gotten a massive beat-down like 84-year-old Kang Wong did when he was snagged by NY’s finest for jaywalking last month.

Stephen was one of 28 people stopped for jaywalking that day. Seven of those were issued citations. The Austin police department has denied targeting jaywalkers that day, instead claiming that they were working “pedestrian enforcement” to ensure traffic safety.
Stephen was reportedly charged with failing to identify and a class B signal violation.
Acevedo has since apologized for his comments:
“I attempted to place the arrest into context by bringing attention to the fact that law enforcement deals with many acts of serious misconduct. In hindsight I believe the comparison was a poor analogy, and for this I apologize.”
Well, we have to give Acevedo credit for one thing: he publicly acknowledged the prevalence of sexual misconduct by law enforcement officers.

Wow the level of writing that passes itself of as "press" just keeps going down. Of course then theres the people who just cut and paste from propaganda sites without doing any independent research. Lily Dane has issues with her facts and distorting things she did get right out of all resemblance with the truth.

It's a piss-poor attitude to have towards women that the police chief would even thoughtlessly utter such garbage.

She played a stupid game with the cops. Shoulda took her ticket (or more likely, warning) and went on with life instead of playing the "I can't hear you" game and going limp on the sidewalk.

Out of fairness that's not really press. It's an opinion website. That Ron Paulites like to call home.

Let's play "I didn't hear the sirens or see the lights on I-35".
Scrape the fender of the cruiser when they pull alongside.

    Where might we end up?
When a officer with city, county, state or federal authority legally asks that you stop and you don't, it likely doesn't result in you getting away without answering for yourself. This includes identifying yourself.

Joe Paggs was ranting about this. I haven't watched the video. Honestly she is probably a big govt lefty. It doesn't bother me if lefty get accosted by police. They want all the laws and infringements on us. Its nice to see them get a taste of their own medicine.

When you ask for socialist gov't, don't be surprised to get the socialist police force with it. Acevedo is just following type.....as Himmler & Bereia did....

OK....we've kicked this around a bit. Here's a "what if". What if the jogger had a physical hearing impairment instead of having her hearing canceled by headphones?

It's not illegal to be deaf but her noncompliance would SEEM to be that she was ignoring the cop. Should the cops knock her down then cuff and stuff her anyway? How would a cop know what appropriate action should be? OOPS, sorry I smashed your face, but you WERE Jaywalking!

This should never happen for a Jaywalking offense!

What, the cops shouldn't stop people for mere class C's? Because hearing or not that is all that happened , the cop ran up beside her and grabbed her are. If she couldn't hear and ignored or didn't see the gesturing cop that was in her line of sight what do you want cops to do when they need to stop someone who can't hear? Mail them a letter? Also why ignore what happened and chang the story so the cops knocked her down instead of her going limp and sitting on the sidewalk herself? Tossing in smashing of the face? It's like asking "What if there was a situation that has almost no resemblance to this one?"
