    Hey guys,

I am trying to add a single point sling attachment to the back of my M4, but I can't get the frickin castle nut off. A buddy let me borrow his wrench, and it's a decent one, but I have had the m4 for 5 years and never have taken this off, so it seems to be on there nice and tight. Are there any tips you suggest for getting this thing to break from its tight grip?

I really dont want to take it to a shop for something as trivial as this, but I also dont want to strip the thing either.

    Thanks.

Let me preface this by saying I have not done this myself, but the first things that come to my mind are either it's left hand thread or it's pinned/peened.

Hit it with some penetrating oil, let it sit for a few minutes, and then...lay the receiver flat on your bench with the grip to the top, set the wrench so it is pointing to the other side (from the grip) just over the bench and then push the grip and receiver into the bench with your left hand while cranking the wrench into the bench with your other hand. Max torque, minimum chance to tweak the receiver.

Easier if you are 6'3" and have paws for hands, but hell, it works for me.

If it is just peened, it will come off easily enough. If it is epoxied or otherwise chemically sealed and the oil trick didn't work, you may have to heat the castle nut until the epoxy breaks free. I've never seen one done with any stronger than red Loctite, but I've only pulled a few hundred stocks and there are a lot of guys building AR's out there (and gods only know what some of them are thinking).

    Good luck :D

Bushmaster and a few other manufactures put blue locktight on them. Heat may be the best way if that's the case.

Damn guys. Just wrap the jaws of your vice to pad them. Put the lower in it and tighten firmly. Carefully loosen with a cheater bar.

Loctite can be released with the proper application of heat (propane torch or heat gun).

Never attempt to smith a gun without the proper tools and fixtures.

It will only lead to head-aches and embarrassment when you have to take it to a smith.
