Biggest advantage shotguns have is price. You can get a decent 18.5" pump for $180 brand new. At that price you could have one for every room in your house

Beyond price they pretty much suck at everything else. They are a lot of fun to shoot at stuff, tho. They make a proper mess of anything you aim them at.

THAT was a long time ago on the ultraweb sir!
lol... The topic has been re-hashed here many times.

Candy cane loads. When I lived in Northern California on some amount of land that was how I dealt with it. Birdshot as a "warning" then buckshot and slugs after. I do not approach living in Austin the same. I do not think it would work here but out there with no cover and a lot of line of sight I thought it worked. Like everything shotguns have a job but they can't do all jobs.

I'm very pro-shotgun when it comes to home defense. I accept that it shouldn't over-penetrate and might just make a nasty mess, but I know I can't point or shoot any weapon system faster. I got one by my bed with a flashlight. My bedroom is upstairs and besides a cell phone to call the cops- there's nothing else I'll need to protect my family from a home invader.

I can't think of a better close quarter weapon besides maybe a submachine gun. Hitting something with an ounce + of lead at 1200 fps, that's some real energy going down range, I would never think of being without one. Why do you think every police cruiser in America has one??? As far as distance goes, I've been a slug hunter my whole life so I think you'd have a hard time getting within 125 yards of me without wishing I wasn't shooting at you...

What worries me about a shotgun is that it is just as likely to maim someone as kill them. And with all these stories popping up of a home owner facing prosecution from a surviving assailant it seems easier to justify two in the chest and one in the head than permanently disfiguring someone as crazy as it sounds.
