I hear you on all that!

We should start demanding studies from them to back their claims. Peer-reviewed and properly conducted, of course... Not like the BS "studies" they used to build their case for the smoking ban.

Be careful what you wish for. I'd wager there are already a dozen studies backing their claims (and probably two or three dozen refuting them).

Peer review does more harm than good when you cherry-pick what info the public knows about it. Remember the study saying violent video games are catalysts for Columbine-style violence? It got SKEWERED in peer reviews, yet outside of a few up-to-date psychologists, no-one heard about that part. All they heard was that a peer-reviewed study proves Doom caused Columbine.

Yeah, I'm looking for studies that haven't been debunked, hence the reference to the second hand smoke studies.

I know a lot of people like backing up opinions with studies, but personally I don't trust any of them since statistics are so maleable I consider them useless no matter who quotes them. I prefer to rely on the old bullshit detector. "Does it make sense? Cui bono? Have I seen evidence of it working elsewhere?"

Unfortunately most people never master asking simple questions like those. You get a mind-blowingly uneducated (and even worse- stupid and ignorant) population like SA and it's no wonder they only focus on the wonderful things the politicians say about their own programs without a thought in the world to things like budgeting, taxation, corruption, etc.

    Hell No!

This is nothing more than a failed liberal Harvard inspired attempt to redistribute from the producers to the moochers.

This plan disguises "early education" for free "baby sitting" for only 6,000 kids of SA's biggest looser parents (none of whom will be proven to be good parents or even married).

When mom has to work, Grandma should be there to help. But no -- let the taxpayer pick up the slack for irresponsible and prolific breeders.

    FU*K no!

This is my first time to open the Politics forum and I'm glad I did. New government programs like this are another excellent example of why democracy doesn't work. Politicians can fool enough people into thinking they can actually vote themselves to prosperity, with some other nebulous 3rd party (usually "that rich guy" over there...) to pay for it all.

There was a guy named Frederic Bastiat in France about 160 years ago who called this facet of socialism "legal plunder." It's explained very well in a book he wrote entitled The Law. It's been translated into English and is very accesible.

Anyway, I'm glad that most of the members that posted in this thread can see through the thin veneer of Castro's ridiculous plan to further indebt us to government.
