it's gonna offer very little protection from the elements like sun/rain/snow/lead.
    Stop being a pussy.

I'd sooner bug out on my Streetglide than purchase than monstrosity lmao
That'd work as long as you had pavement. The point to those motopeds or a 250 dual sport is that they are light, nimble, and go anywhere. With that motoped you could even pick it up and carry it across terrain that was too harsh to ride over.

Agreed. I love dual sports too. A 250xl is one of my favorite bikes I've rode. What's the Suzuki one DRZ? I didn't like the KLR because of the size but I could see how it could be a better option.

An old VW bus is my choice. Slap some large wheels and tires on, a case of oil and it will run forever. Nice part is trannys last forever and engine works is easy. No need for water for cooling. I have been looking for a decent one now a couple months Might have found one. gotta go talk to the guy.

No, there really is not a long term answer other than SSE (shoe sole express), everything else has a high and a VERY HIGH overhead. First is fuel, unless it burns wood its range is now limited. Load carrying ability (note I did not say capacity). I spent a lot of time on a mountain bike from Maine to Florida over a lot of years and your enemy is always GoG (center of gravity) and even more so in off camber. Even on a mountain bike I could not easily carry enough water/food for a full days summer ride. Figure a gallon of water and 5000+ cals.

Say what you will about motorbikes going anywhere, yea, but ONLY in the hands of a VERY exp rider.

For us Jeep guys, Moab is our Mecca. With 13 trips out there for 1-2 weeks at a time on some of the most challenging trails in the US there is always a need to share with mountain bikers, trails motorbikes and ATV's. As the trail goes on and on, they soon fade from view. MB folks get tired real fast of hauling their BM up and over obstacles, same goes for the guys on motor driven trails machines. ATV's are the very FIRST to drop out, since they are to heavy to pick up. Their prime enemy besides CoG is way to short wheelbase and the all too often flat tires (???) More than once I picked up a MB walking his bike back to the trailhead due to a flat tire or other breakage, sometimes exhaustion from all the walking and lifting.

In the end game its boot leather...

Horses traversed the entire country before public utilities and gas stations existed.

    I think they're a good bet.
They did and did it well, but they are slow and need a lot of calories to keep going, so you are in constant search of open lands for them to feed. A horse will not out travel a man. I have spent a lot of time in the saddle and done some long trail rides, in excess of 150 miles. They are walkers not runners and they walk at a slow pace. Feeding a 1000 lbs of horse out on the trail is a real challenge.

Well if you run out of food for em they don't cook up so bad!
That's my kind of thinkin there.
Most people will take more than they need at first and a horse can carry more than you can and farther. But supplies are bound to dwindle and restock is iffy at best. Beast of burden until it becomes food.
