On a serious note, how many land owners do you think have gone to a public shooting range? If they have ever been to one, and their exposure to the gun community is based on what they see there, why would they EVER let a bunch of non shooting yahoos on their property? Yes pigs are a major nuisance, but not as much as vet bills for bullet holes in livestock.

I have the land I have the hogs but my wife is worried about the horses and the goat (you can shoot the damn goat just dont tell her I said that) you guys seem cool but when u accidently shoot one of my horses and u got to pony up thousands of dollars to pay my vet you may not be so cool.

All kidding aside, I understand the concern. I've been lucky enough at one point to have the run of 12,000 acres down in Laredo. The owner's son and I became close friends, and over time his Dad came to see that we were "all season" friends vs "hunting season" friends. I'd done everything from disconnecting and reinstalling 125 hp electric irrigation motors to working all night to unfreeze the pipes in the Dad's pumphouse when they froze one winter. Over time, my hunting priveleges grew to not only include ANY place I wanted to go (including Dad's "private" 3,000 acre patch) to being told to go shoot a calf and the hands would butcher it up for me to bring home to the family. Passed a NICE buck one season because he was one the wrong side of the fence, only to find out later that they owned that pasture, too - but it definitely earned me the Dad's trust, because he grew to know I respected boundaries.

Flip side...we had 500 acres outside of Junction. I had guests throw cans/trash out into the pasture, leave their blinds and walk all over the place while others were still out actively hunting - you name it. Never had any livestock killed, but the going rate was $5/lb, too - LIVE weight.<G>

carry a side arm. keep track of trees with easy climbing branches. be afraid. be very afraid

Keep a gun on the ready, and know that you cannot outrun them. If it gets close, blast it. I normally take my 44 mag lever gun with open sights. Great for up close work.

But it depends on how you hunt them and where. Need a different gun for long range. Then if its with dogs, a big-ass knife will do. Now THAT is a rush.

I understand, I know I'm not shooting any thing besides a hog and would own up to it if I did, but I'm just words on the Internet so no worries. Thanks for considering it though.

I haven't ruled it out, but I know when you in the moment and all u get the tunnel vision ans u dont see that mare behind that hog and u either miss or u get a through and through and now you paying for my mare.

Oh, I "get" the concern....one of the reasons I like the .35 carbine - doesn't tend to deflect as much, and relatively shorter range compared to some of the other rounds.

You would be shocked at how many people forget the "Know your target, and what is beyond it" rule when out night hunting pigs.
