Trying to find a suitable inexpensive gun for home defense. I'm already invested fairly deep in guns but not what I consider home defense.

Is this Mossberg pump a reliable shooter or would a semi-auto be a better choice?

I tried searching the forum but did not find this particular Mossberg.

I think the only difference in the 500 and 88 is the trigger group, safety and aftermarket accessories. The 88 is fine especially if you just want to run it as is.

I have that model and highly recommend it. Inexpensive (at least when I bought), works very well, loaded with #4 buck and is my home defense gun. 00 buck good to take to the field for hog protection. I have six shotguns but this is my home protector.
When people ask what to buy for home protection this is what I tell them to get. My expensive shotguns are for the clays. To protect me and mine I like this gun. Plus, you can shoot slugs, buck, birdshot, whatever. You can also buy a barrel for shooting clays if you want and it's an easy switch.

That will be perfectly fine and outlast you.

Just dont take it dove or quail hunting.

I needed a damn wheelbarrow to haul ammo around with just to get enough for dinner.

Ya I was that guy who forgot the long barrel. Twice. But the second time was Quail season just a month after dove season and I left it in the car so it's not really my fault cause I didnt see it.

Naw, I dont buy it either.

good gun for that as long as it has the shortest barrel you can have on it.

    and I prefer #1 buck over 00 or 4

Thanks guys for all the replys! Looks like an 88 is the ticket. Now if I can find one new or used. Briefly checking the Houston area there are none.

I have a single shot 20 gauge now loaded with #3 buck. It's actually an over and under Savage 223/20 ga. Just need a little better with all the rioting and looting going on now.

A Mossberg 20ga with #3 Buck is a pretty good choice, too.

I have one. The 88 is nice as it is a short barrel and holds many rounds. I have it loaded with 00 buck. I take it out once a year to fire a couple of rounds and clean it. The price was right when I got mine $189 Black Friday Sale when I lived on Commiefornia

PSA has the 18” Maverick in stock (for now) for $300. In normal times, that’s not a great price. But these are not normal times, and it’s available (for now).
I went to PSA and ran a pricing shipped. By the time they added shipping, tax and who knows how much for the FFL dealer probably close to $375-400 for a gun were it locally less than $200. Times are tough for guns right now for sure! I'll have to think about this. Not even sure I could select an honest FFL dealer. So much easier if I could just go down and buy the gun. I have a concealed gun carry license. That should be sufficient to buy a gun online direct!

    Thanks for the heads up!

I have one I will sell you for $300, and I will throw in some buckshot with it.

Includes the adapter to shoot the mini shells, 20 rounds of the mini shells, 25 rounds of full size 00 Buckshot.

88 for HD. Small loss when confiscated after a shoot. I have normal 12 & 20 both are great. I have #4 - should work fine.
