the other day I was in HEB

Earlier this week I was in HEB and bought 3 items. Then they ask me if I wanted a bag and I said, yeah I guess then they said it would be 27 cents for the bag.

I looked and there were no bags in any of the bag holders all down the check out lanes and I said I don't have to pay for bags in my HEB then she said maybe you don't know we have a bag ban here. I said, ok, I'm not paying for a bag and walked out and notices about 4 Prius' in the parking lot with Bernie stickers on them and it hit me

I was in Austin.

you people are "different" from where I live

it was nice to get on 183 north later that day and drive about 20 minutes and re-enter Texas

What really annoys me about Austin (and I grew up there so I know the city) is that everyone acts like they are some enlightened beacon inside the darkness of Texas ignorance while ignoring the fact they have the freedom to be so weird because the rest of the state prefers to keep the government out of our business.

My only experience with the bag ban was a few years ago. We just got into Austin for a bachelor party and stopped at a gas station for food and drinks. I was buying so everyone picked their drinks and snacks and left them at the counter with me. After I paid, the guy was like, "Do you have your bag?" I was like "Huh?" He told me, we don't have bags here. I thought that was the dumbest thing ever, for a gas station to run out of bags, then it hit me... So I pulled out the front of my shirt and swept everything into it (about 8 drinks and half again as many snacks) like a little kid, and very carefully walked out. Everyone in line was giving me a weird look, so I not so quietly mumbled, "Fucking Austin..."

Meh.

It was odd at first but now I take a bag plus a insulated backpack for the beer. Win win.
Want to have fun? Take a 50 qt cooler. Put it on the conveyor first and then have jimbo "sacking" load it. That really screws them up.

They still don't know what to do with the raw chicken.

They tried that 'bag ban' thing here in Dallas last year.... didn't last long. WalMart was charging a nickel per bag. This was within Dallas city limits; as far as I know, the burbs weren't following. Guess they had too many folks complaining so after a short while: back to 'free' bags!

What keeps Dallas from turning into a blue hell like Houston is the suburbs surrounding it combine to a higher population and it's a lot of white collar workers who want to earn their paycheck, go home, and not be bothered.

I know very few people who choose to live in Dallas proper even though I know dozens of people who work there.

I went to the Academy off 183 in north Austin few weeks ago and they gave me a paper bag. That same day GTs gave me a cardboard box for the gun and extra mags I bought. I don't live there so I never have my own bags.

Austin ... the only place in Texas I have consistently experienced idiots in the left lane deliberately starting late, then going as slow as possible when the light changes so those behind them will have to wait until the next light.
Worked there quite a bit the past few years and see it too often to be a coincidence.
