I haven't hunted since I moved to Texas, but BOY! did I hunt in British Columbia! Moose, Elk, Caribou, Mule Deer, Whitetail Deer, Buffalo, Black Bear, Grizzly bear, Cougar, Mountain Goat, four of the five North American Mountain Sheep, Wolf, Coyote, Lynx, Bob Cat....the list is endless. B.C. has 364,800 square miles of which 94% is Crown Land. Crown Land, comparable to Federal Land here is wide open to hunting which means I had over 342,000 square miles of land to hunt on outside of any National Park. That's a larger area than the entire state of Texas. I can't get my head around being limited to hunting on a few hundred acres or less and hunting over bait.

This is kind of how I feel moving here from VA. Tho not nearly as much land as BC VA has a lot of public hunting land and many inexpensive hunting clubs that can get you access to private land. Also, the hunting over bait thing is a big change for me.

I suppose I'll either adjust or go back to VA to hunt since it'll be cheaper for me to fly back and hunt VA as a non-resident than it will be to hunt in TX =)

until I bought my own land, for years I got onto leases or scored day hunts by working for lease holders and land owners.
I helped them build camps, ran feeders for them so they wouldn't have to drive 3 hours one way and just generally paid with sweat equity. Lots of times I got to bow hunt prior to gun season and then I got to bat clean up by gun hunting after Christmas when everyone on the lease was pretty much done. I went in an hunted for meat, which is 75% of why I hunt any way.

I said that to show you that there are ways to hunt here cheaply if you work at it.

    Hey vmax,

I did my share of sweating to get access to land in VA so I know how it work. However, I don't have the connections to make that happen yet in TX since I don't know too many people yet.

I am, however, getting out, meeting people and offering to help where I can. I just need to let time play out. =)

I made 65 lbs of venison sausage and stocked in my parents deep freeze. They had a power outage last week and didn't reset the breaker on the outlet that the freezer was plugged into. Not only did I loose everything that was stocked in there, but it smelled so bad I wasn't even upset about it anymore.

Bought dove decoys and shells from academy today. License next.. can't wait for cooler weather...

If you don't have a mojo yet, get one. Last year the dang doves almost lit on it. I had to keep my finger off of the boom switch to keep from blasting it out of the ground. +1 on the cooler weather, but it is dove hunting in September in TX. I've been out where the sun was going to fry your eyeballs out one day, the next day a front came in and it was chilly. I kind of like it.

Using the decoys for the first time. I bought a mojo voodoo, mojo wind and some of the cheaper decoys.... I have some friends from ft worth coming to spend 3 to 4 days at the ranch in October. Last year no luck with hogs but then again, we didn't do much night hunting....too many beers by that time...

You will love them. Get you a couple of packs of re-chargeable AA's, and you are good to go.

I used to when in Texas. Love those doves flying with the wind LOL. FAST------ I`m in the same boat up here --don`t really know anyone and it is different here. Lots of woods and you are limited what rifle you can shoot. Cartridge case cannot exceed 1 .25 ". That leaves .243, .30-.30 and about everything out except .357 and .44 mag. You can use shotgun and slugs here. I have never seen so many black powder shooters in one place. Real big here. Bow is too.

I spent last weekend putting up tree stands on my place in Bama. Man it was hot. Bush hogged another acre or so to plant in Sept. Bow season starts 25 Oct in south Alabama. Can't wait!
