S&W Model 686 Distinguished .357 Combat Magnum Revolver with AFP2331 serial number, left S&W factory in Nov 84 - Feb 85. SCSW puts production sometime from Nov 1984 to Jan 1985. Amazing double action and single action trigger, very short, crisp and light. In 2010 the 686 was returned to S&W for the "M" stamp for the firing pin bushing modification and a satin, glass bead blasting refinish. The checkered Goncalo Alves hardwood grips are stamped April 1 1984.
Background :
The 686 was introduced in the 1980's as the S&W Model 686 Distinguished Combat Magnum Stainless. It featured flash-chromed, forged hammer and trigger, and had a 6-shot cylinder. The Model 686 is based on S&W's L (medium-large) revolver frame. During the 1980s, Smith & Wesson developed its L-Frame line of .357 Magnums which includeded the 686. They had checkered Goncalo Alves hardwood grips with speer loader cuts until 1994, when the grip was replaced by a rubber Hogue grip. Traditional 686 with a square butt grip frame serrated fore and aft, with adjustable rear sight, a fixed Red Ramp front sight, .312" Smooth Combat satin stainless trigger and .375" semi target hammer.
