The commander of U.S. Navy destroyer USS John McCain has been relieved of his duties months after the service branch faced ridicule on social media for posting a photo of him firing a rifle with its scope mounted backward.

Cmdr. Cameron Yaste was recently let go from his position "due to a loss of confidence in his ability to command the guided-missile destroyer," the Navy announced in a statement, without elaborating.

    Helotes!
I'm not excusing this Officer for this, but what happened to the Weps Officer, Weps Chief and the Petty Officer (Armorer) that set that weapon up? What happened to them?

He wasn't relieved due to the picture (although it certainly didn't help!), it was for a “loss of confidence” in his ability to command the ship (a broad claim all services like to use in such circumstances).

Seriously, how can you trust a commander who can't even realize that things which should look close are actually looking very far away?!?

I realize that this act by itself does no get an officer fired, but somewhere along the way his Chiefs failed him. During my 25 years I was lucky enough to serve under a lot of great Skippers. Now XO's and OIC's, that's a different story. As a young Seaman on my first ship, our Skipper had a habit of walking around the ship late at night when underway. He always showed up at my space last since it was located near the fantail, but he always had a cup of coffee to offer when he entered. It has been 42 years since those nights, but we still keep in touch. You might say he made an impression on me. The XO on that same ship was a real piece of work and always demanded you stay in your own paygrade even during command functions like steel beach picnics or decommissioning party. Spent 3 years in Guam and watched one ship across the harbor have 3 CO'S received for cause.

Actually IMHO that pic is photoshopped. No smoke and 2 cases in the air? Scope looks funny too.

    Or maybe it was because:

"U.S Navy fired a warship captain last month after an unresolved steering issue led to a dangerous near-miss incident in the Middle East.

Cmdr. Cameron Yaste, the commanding officer of the Arleigh Burke-class destroyer USS John S. McCain was relieved over a loss of confidence in his ability to lead.

Investigation highlighted that he was removed after the destroyer lost steering during a fuel replenishment which damaged a Navy oiler.

Yaste and the other crew members made mistakes including poor maintenance and failure to follow protocols which contributed to the incident, per the investigation. It also highlighted that the Navy failed to solve the recurring steering issue onboard the destroyer which happened a month before this incident."

The Navy frowns on running into other ships.
