When I took driver's ed in 1965, the vehicles were supplied by auto dealers and all provided with automatic transmissions. My first vehicle was a 53 ford with a 3 speed on the column.
WAY BACK IN THE MID 1970'S WHEN MY BROTHER AND I WERE LEARNING TO DRIVE ALL OF OUR FAMILIES VEHICLES HADMANUAL TRANSMISSIONS! IIRC THEY AREN'T TEACHING STUDENTS CURSIVE WRITING ANYMORE EITHER!

Can you operate a standard shift vehicle?

Can your wife or kids or Grand-kids?
Yes, I can and so can my wife, daughter (maybe, if I remember right) and son. My son currently has two cars with a stick shift. I changed over to an automatic for my last two small cars both Toyota Corollas, prior to them I had a Mazda 323 with a 5 speed manual transmission. When I got my Toyota Corollas up in NY, it was impossible to find one with a manual transmission in my area and I would have had to special order one at too much of an additional cost. I learned how to drive on a manual so I taught my family the same.

3 of our 5 vehicles have manual transmissions, and all the motorcycles. When I replaced my 99F250 last year a manual is no longer offered, and I have to admit the 10 speed auto in my new truck is pretty good.

I’m going to have to ask my kids. I’ve got 2 daughters and a son. The oldest daughter probably can, middle daughter, probably not. Son can operate anything. I’ll check with them, I’m curious now.

car makers still make standard cars/pickups?
Wife and I both daily drive manuals. Daughter knows how, but chooses to be lazy. Oldest grandson is just about tall enough to reach the pedals so I need to make sure he can.

There's not many new manual cars left. Only the Taco and Gladiator for pickups. I'm never buying an automatic again. If you're going to let the computer drive for you, might as well get one of those ipads with four wheels.

Manuals are fun to drive, but suck hard-core in stop and crawl traffic. I like my automatic on my daily I-35 commute.

    Around town, manuals suck.
Driving a manual in traffic doesn't suck; traffic sucks. You're just a lazy coward.
