Yup. Tikka and browning are solid options. If your son is planning on it being a hunting rifle, I'd steer him away from the heavy barreled " tactical style" rifles that once you add a scope you have a 10 - 15 pound rifle to lug around.
I'd also shy away from the package rifles and entry level crap if he plans on a life long firearm.
Savage 14 or 16 model's
Tikka
CZ
Winchester
Browning, all of these brands make some nice hunting rifles.
It depends on the type of chassis. For what you're asking I would run a Tikka, Savage or 700 action and put it in a chassis

I have a Steyr Mannlicher Shonauer carbine in 308 with mounts and 2.5x7 Leupold click adjustment for $1500 circa 1950's and beautiful. My son, who has recently graduated from college and now has a real JOB, is looking to buy his first bolt action rifle for deer and hog hunting. His caliber of choice (Thank God!) is the ubiquitous .308. My question is which rifle? He’s leaning towards the Sig Sauer Cross rifle because of it’s resemblance to the AR platform. I’m sure the “tacticool” look of the rifle also has a lot to do with his choice. Problem is this rifle has been getting a lot of bad reviews regarding it’s accuracy, bolt not closing easily on loading, magazines not seating properly, etc. Especially since this rifle runs right around 1500 bucks without any glass. There are too many models available to search out everyone of them so I thought asking here might be an effective way of sorting out the chaff from the wheat. Does anyone have any experience and/or knowledge of a good .308 bolt action with a resemblance to the AR platform?
