Crash helmets, but no seat belts? Kind of difficult to survive an ejection and getting rolled over on by a car. Crazy!

Back in the day, "scramble" starts were common. Drivers would start across the track from their cars, at the green flag, they'd run across the track, jump in, start up and go. Not messing with a seatbelt was a good way to save several seconds at a critical point of the race.

And they say car racing is dangerous today. Back I think in 64 the seat belt law came in effect in passenger cars. I remember my Dad was upset because he had to get a seat belt kit for the car. I didn't use min regularly till 1981 when I was forced off the road and my 9 month old daughter just about flew out the window, after that I always used them.
