AT what yardage do you sight your rifles in ? I use the Maximum Point Blank system. The faster the velocity the further one can shoot without using hold over over. For instance my 22-243 Ack Improved has a range of zero to 311 yards with no holdover . For the longer distance I use this dope table :
    Drag Function: G1
    Ballistic Coefficient: 0.246
    Bullet Weight: 60 gr
    Initial Velocity: 4060 fps
    Sight Height : 1.5 in
    Shooting Angle: 0°
    Wind Speed: 10 mph
    Wind Angle: 90°
    Zero Range: 46 yd
    Chart Range: 1000 yd
    Maximum Range: 3928 yd
    Step Size: 25 yd
    International Standard Atmosphere
    Altitude: Sea Level (0 ft)
    Barometric Pressure: 29.92 Hg
    Temperature: 59° F
    Relative Humidity: 50%
    Speed of Sound: 1116 fps

I have so many rifles that run so many different loads so I stick with 100 yards zero for hunting rifles, 25 for 22 rifles. 50 yards for red dots. I don't dope my guns since I'll go from plinking to precision on any given range session. I also rarely stretch them out even though I do have a 7mm WSM and a 6.5 creedmor in the stable. My 280 is not an AI and strictly used for whitetail. The old Leupold vari x III on it has held zero over hundreds of rough country 4 wheeler rides and that's all I ask of it.

When I get some good glass on my Tikka tac3x A1(6.5c) I'll probably zero it at 100 and just use holdover as needed. Eventually I plan on pushing it to 800 yards but that's a ways away. It will be worth doping it once I settle on a standard load.

Bullseye at 25, test for 100 adjust to 2" at 100 puts it good at 200+ for a old fashion duplex. Depending on cartridge the faster ones are pretty much point blank to 350-400 for deer.
Practice and see what you need to do.
    I shoot animals not targets
So specifics aren't a big part. If wind is up correct for it. Or wait

I zero my rifles at 100 yards, mostly because this is the most common average distance I am shooting. A viewer of my YouTube channel actually ran the stats on my shots last year and the average was 105 yards. The year before that, it was 97 or 98 yards. So I am in the ballpark and so that is where I zero.

Most folks overestimate their hunting shot distances.

    I’ve been guilty, too.

Few of us are snipers, and very few of us will try a game shot over 200M.

    For 7mm Rem Mag, .243, .223, etc. ~ 1-3/4” high at 100 yards.

I usually go for 50 yards. On 5.56 and .30-06 it's good enough to get me out to 200 yards.
Kinda partial to 36yd BZO for 556. Of course that’s with 62gr M855, a Trijicon RCO (ACOG) and a 20” barrel. Of course being aircrew and then later a Staff NCO I rated a 14.5 M4, I still always chose the M16A4 because I preferred the A2 stock. Also, the first time I saw a M4 the Recon Marines were qualifying with it and the wind was pretty significant and was blowing their rounds around at the 500yd targets. They weren’t happy with their qual scores that week.

Last carbine class I took the instructor asked our zeros and I had mine at 100, and so did a few others. Why did I do that? Meh, MOA, 100yd mentality, plus the range I was on to set it up was 100. Realistically, 36 is what I need to de-zero it for. Semper Fidelis.

I don't think that is as common these days with the common use of range finders.

I don't particularly like a 36 yard zero. There's nothing really wrong with it, but a 50 yard zero is way more practical within 200 yards, and i can confirm a 50/200 way easier than a 36/300 with the ranges i have access to.

Also, no BDC I'm aware of is set for a 36 yard zero. They're all 50 or 100 yards.
