Please forgive my noob question. I'm fairly new to guns and extremely new to shotguns. I just got my first one yesterday in a trade. It's a remington 870 express magnum. I did not know what a choke was till today but now that I do I'd like to find out what kind my gun has. Is there any way to tell by just looking at it? I don't have a tool to remove it? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

It'll usually be stamped on the side of the choke itself. Tool isn't really expensive. If you're careful, a set of lock ring pliers will get it out as well.

On most tubes there are notches on the edge. Not the ones that are used to take it in and out, but a set close together. Can't tell from the picture if yours has them or not.

Remington and most of other popular brands use this system.

You can get a lot of good info here. The best shotgun info is shotgunworld. Com
Most remingtons come with a modified choke from the factory.

You didn't say, but I assume this is a 12-ga? Most Rem 870's that have a screw-in choke usually come standard with a Modified choke - this means a (roughly) 25-tho' tighter constriction than cylinder bore.

You can also measure the width at the mouth with calipers, if you have any.

    From loosest to tightest:
    1. Cylinder
    2. Improved Cylinder
    3. Modified
    4. Full

(Above list is ignoring the specialized chokes that fit in between or outside of those categories eg. Skeet, Extra Full, etc).

For slugs, cyl is best. Personaly, i would not go any more than improved cylinder or the constriction would be too much smaller than whats coming out
