The bullets are sliding back or down?

I had a Savage where the back of the round would sometimes drop down and the bolt wouldn't grab it.

I took it apart and bent the mag spring a little to put more pressure on the back of the rounds to keep them up. Don't over do it though as too much will let the front of the rounds drop. You want to keep the rounds as level as possible.

I don't see how the rounds could be sliding back. That sounds like a short stroking situation where you aren't pulling the bolt back far enough.

I don't even know what to say.

How many bolt actions do you own? Have you ever shot a gun before?

    Typing classes?

Ok that post was horrible. I was on my phone and not drunk....
I have had the rifle for 10+ years, and I have shot about 15 rounds through it. After a shot when I pull back the bolt (all the way back) the next shell in the magazine is to far back and the bolt cannot grab it. The magazine is an internal one.

If you can post a picture it would be helpful.

I have the same model rifle at home in .243 and will take a look after work to see what might cause this, but it's hard to imagine what would allow the bullets to sit to far back for the bolt to catch.

Whats that lip, right before the feed ramp?

Did you remove the trigger guard? Mess with the box magazine?

The lip is catching your rounds. Nothing to do with bolt.

Actually, there is something else going on. The rounds shouldn't be able to go back that far.

Here is the empty box on mine.

    ImageUploadedByTapatalk1409704747.759836.jpg

It's a little hard to tell on yours because the pic loads upside down.

The cut out for the box magazine should not extend further back than the bolt can go.

This may sound dumb, but are you 100% sure you are loading it with .270 rounds. That same parent case is used for a few different calibers.

    2. Are you 100% sure the rifle is a .270

    3. Can you post a pic of the empty box

    4. Do you have to slide the rounds beneath the bolt to load? It looks like they barely fit the magazine and the top round shown doesn't appear to be at the top of the box, but held down a little. Looks like it's not high enough to catch the ramp, as pointed out by Grasshopper.

    5. Is there any chance the follower is installed backwards (should be able to tell with a pic of it empty)

Is it a hinged floorplate mag?
If so, open it and hold the feed lip plate forward as you close it.
Looks like its not aligned in the chassis and should be furter forward.

That round looks entirely too long for that action.

Ok, I take that back. These are both Savage 110s. See how far back my bolts retract? All the way flush with the ejection port.

I think something is blocking your bolt from going back all the way.

See if you can get the bolt OUT of the gun, like for cleaning purposes. I have a 116fcss savage and it has the same style bolt in it. If your action and my action are similar, the bolt isn't traveling as far backwards as it should be.

the rounds are 270 Winchester. the magazine is a internal one so I cant remove the bottom. I do plan to try and unbolt it all and look at the internals. The two pictures I am adding is one with the bolt and one with it removed. I clean my rifle after the last time I used it and as a safety precaution I remove the bolt and store it in my mini safe. I dont have a safe yet and I have a kid running around

A few dumb questions just to cover some basics.

You are sure the rifle is chambered in .270?

You are sure those are .270 rounds?

You are sure that the bolt goes back as far as possible when you cycle it?

Have you fired these particular rounds from the same box of ammo in this rifle before?

Sorry, just some basic things to check as we proceed. Sometimes you look at a box of ammo and see what you want, not what it really says. It has happened before.
