Has anyone ever hunted Sandhill Crane? I just moved here and this is the first Ive heard of it. Are they a tough hunt? Rumor around the web is they taste pretty good but just the breast meat?? It seems like an unusual animal to hunt. Any quick tips in-case i decide to give it a try?

First tip, get yourself a 10 gauge shotgun. Their big and mean. Dog take your dog with you because they will rip a dog apart. Make sure it's dead before you pick it up.
They fly high, and have a thick matting of feathers.
I saw some a ton of them at the gun range the other day. As the sun sets, you'll see them come into the watering holdes.
I dont think Ft. Worth has any around that end of Texas though.

I saw that you need to get like a "stamp" to hunt them and that they are only legal to shoot down in south and east areas. A ten guage sounds good too

Yes it is a free permit but you have to get it directly from TPWD. You used to be able to get it at any license dealer but they changed it in the last few years.
