First of all Rip ammo would not be my first choice. That stuff is nothing more than an exotic gimmick. That being said I would choose something like a xtp bullet . No to your question it’s legal.

I still have a slew of still-very-viable SD pistol ammo from Gold Dot to Cor-Bon to Winchester Ranger (what ages ago was called Black Talon). But for the past couple of years I've standardized on Hornady Critical Defense.

I like the specs, shoots well in the guns I own, and I figure if I ever do come face-to-face with a hostile DA that "Critical Defense" is a better name for ammo than something like, say, "DRT Terminal Shock." :D

Yeah; I know the name doesn't actually matter. But if I had any general advice about someone pretty new to carrying who's looking to select ammo, it would be to stick with the major brands, do the research, gauge effectiveness and popularity, then only buy one 20-round box at a time to try in a specific pistol. Nowadays most semi-autos aren't as finicky as they once were, but SD ammo is going to feed differently than FMJ ball. Be certain your gun is happy with what you plan to feed it. The second worst thing--after a trigger pull and no ignition--is getting one round off and then a failure to feed.
