Years ago I picked up a 5w solar panel for under $50. Used it on the boat to keep the house batteries charged. It allowed us to let the kids use the lights and stereo as much as they wanted, allowed the 12 v fridge to keep food cold for the trip and allowed me to use 2 normal car batteries vice having to go to a 4 bank system for house power. Now I use it to keep the battery in the "midlife crisis car" charged between its bi monthly road trips.

I have been intrigued with the back pack units that would keep a laptop or cell phone charged but have yet to see a need. However I certainly would include one in any off road or vehicle kit if I were getting out into the fields for a weekend or so.
