    A friend of mine who was really bullish on gold investing once explained to me that the amount of goods and services you could buy with an ounce gold today was roughly equivalent to what that same amount of gold would buy you in the year 400. My response was that sounds like a terrible investment.

    (I know the meme is probably about gold standard not investing)

    Well, in addition to that explanation, 1oz of gold OR $20 cash would buy you a suit in 1924. In 2024, that same 1oz of gold will still buy you that same suit, but would cost you $2000 cash.
