Amazing aircraft that has done squat for national security, but it did have a cameo appearance in an Arnold Schwarzenneger film.

The Harrier, V-22, and F-35 all are products of the U.S. Navy having bugged out with its flattops and abandoned the Marines leaving them vulnerable to Japanese air and ground attacks at Guadalcanal.

Ever since, the USMC has called for high performance vertical takeoff aircraft in addition to helicopters.

The Harrier replacement, the F-35, is a total screw up, has only one engine, an over sized fuselage in which to fit the vertical lift fan, and has yet to meet operational requirements.

Now, the Navy and Air Force are stuck with a compromised "next generation" fighter that will be blown out of the sky by older fighters.

At least the Osprey has actually proven itself useful. Ironically, I have a friend who works for Lockheed on the F-35 project, and he agrees with you. Overblown, overhyped, and under-performing. And the "custom" 1911 that Kimber made for the project crew doesn't even look that special.

You might check again on that. USMC Harriers have been used extensively in combat in Iraq, Yugoslavia, Afghanistan and Libya with success. Success with the Harrier is exactly why the USMC wanted a more capable V/STOL aircraft when the ATF program started. They wanted more of the same capability but with better performance and higher speed.

Saw an edited video showing the landing, but the first time to hear the pilot's reactions in his own words.

    It is a cool story.

And they were kinda thinking they might want something with seat heaters and XM radio.
