The Vought F-8 Crusader was the last U.S. Navy fighter designed with guns as its primary weapon with four Colt 20mm cannons. Photo Recon variants, RF-8s, were used to gather photo intelligence on Soviet missile sites in Cuba in October/November 1962. The missions gathered more than 160,000 photographs. F-8s downed 16 MiG-17s and 3 MiG-21s during the Vietnam War, with a 19:3 kill ratio. The majority were downed with the Crusader’s air-to-air missiles as its cannons tended to jam.
