First ever private spacewalk happened today. Look at that freaking spacesuit - NASA's suits are bulky and appear to be a good foot thick on the astronauts' bodies, with a giant fishbowl helmet and rigid limbs that don't seem to be able to bend at the elbows and knees. Very little has changed there since the Apollo suits.

SpaceX spacesuits...look like ski jackets with motorcycle helmets. Looks like the whole purpose of this spacewalk was to test the suit and its mobility - you see Jared Isaacman moving his elbows and shoulders, testing how he can reach various parts of the spacecraft in his suit. Damned impressive.

More on Polaris Dawn: It was the highest-altitude spacewalk in 50 years, the highest altitude women have ever reached, youngest ever spacewalker (Sarah Gillis), and including the ISS and other missions going on, there were a total of 19 people in orbit at the same time - an all-time record.

The weird hand position during the spacewalk was the astronaut just...not using that hand. That's the neutral pressurized position for the glove. And I was right - it's a rigid suit with a cloth covering. There's footage in this video that shows the joints moving under the cloth as Isaacman opens the hatch.

Sporting 3 AIM-120 AMRAAM's (max. range around 110 miles), 4x AIM-174s (max. range in excess of 200 miles), and then a couple of AIM-9X Sidewinders if they decide to let something live long enough to get within 20 miles. OK, so they're all inert captive carry practice rounds, but still. Also note the IRST pod on the centerline drop tank and the new targeting pod under the left intake.

Snagged the pic from several here:

This a Test & Eval bird based out of NWC China Lake. Probably testing on one of the ranges.

Yep, VX-9 Vampires. This pic from the linked article makes the ID easy (if the gloss black paint scheme and tail art didn't already)

VX-9 was created in 1994 when VX-4 Evaluators and VX-5 Vampires were disestablished. VX-4 was famous for its Vandy1 paint scheme featuring a Playboy bunny, which was nixed by political correctness in 1992. When the squadrons were disestablished/combined, they kept the Vampires' squadron logo and name.

Had to add my two-cents-worth regarding "political correctness" at China Lake...
Here's the A-4 that sits in the middle of the Switzer Traffic Circle when entering.

Old photo... NWC vintage. Tradition dictated painting the base commander's name and call sign beneath the cockpit. When Captain Jim Seaman "took the reins" the painter added his call sign beneath his name... "Spurt"...
It surprisingly remained for several months.
