Ordered a metal storage cabinet from Amazon. It showed up yesterday, assembly required. The top of said cabinet was dented and deformed on the edge. So I notified Amazon to let seller know. Meantime I assemble the thing and finagle to get the top on so the doors will work. Wife happy. Today the cabinetmaker responds with they are sending me an entire new cabinet and to keep the old one. While I’m happy things are resolved and I get a free cabinet, how much profit is in this? We paid $140.

While I'm sure they make a good profit off it, it's not all about profit. The cost of returning, repurposing and stocking is a factor. Plus, if they can get a good review over it, that can be a cost benefit.

Last year my wife had a missing cushion on a furniture order. A year later the company has sent four replacement cushions.

About six months ago the mechanicals started messing up on one of my recliners. They sent the internals for the recliner, but couldn't get anyone to work on it. They brought out a new recliner and said to keep what they sent. Too much trouble to take it back. Looking up the cost of the parts they sent, it's over $400.
