I put an SS 10X on my savage .308.
It's about as basic as you can get for a target scope. If you got money to dump for the HD line they have REALLY nice glass. I almost went that route but decided to get the standard and save for a 5-20X HD
And considering the longest shot I will realistically ever take is 300 yards, there is no need for uber high end glass. Learn to shoot the 22lr and then transition to a 308.
Just a side note: The 22lr round acts a lot like the 308 in both drop and wind drift. Every 1 yard of 22lr = 2.5 yards of a 308 in drop. Wind drift is similar too, 100yd of 22lr drift = 230yd 308 drift, 200yd of 22lr drift = 440yd of 308 drift.
