i have seen certain ammo brands marked as "for law enforcement use only"

is this policy backed up with law? or is it say, a company policy or something?

for instance, winchester ranger 9mm fmj i know is marked in this way, but i cant think of why it would be regulated in this manner, as other fmj's are loaded hotter and not marked as LEO only...

No such thing ... it's meant for law enforcement sales. Only the usage of armor piercing handgun ammo is a no-go.

My 50 round box of Federal HST's says the same thing.

I think it is a pricing thing more than anything else. A 50 round box of Federal HST 124gr +P costs less than $20 at the local cop shop. That seems to be about half the cost per round that other premium self-defense ammo goes for. I paid $23 for a 20 round box of .38 +P's not long ago.

i bought some Ranger 9mm +p....but its fmj, not hollowpoint. its marked "LE only". I have no idea why there is a +P ammo that isnt hollowpoint....or why LE would want it?
