Puhkan in the south. Pee can in the north. Before I moved to Texas I said it as pee can. Then I moved here and was shunned for pronouncing it “wrong”.

I avoid the sugars, too, but have to make an exception at Thanksgiving for pecan pie.

Yea the commercial Pecan (puh kahn) pies are more sugar than just about anything else.

When I make mine I use as little sugar as I can because I substitute Pecan Liquor instead and I make a 'flour' from Pecans...

Proper is puhkan but in general depending apon origin it's about a 50/50 deal between the two pronunciations.
