I have heard that Franklin got his start working for one of the Mueller family. He took first place in brisket at the Texas Monthly BBQ Fest a couple weeks ago. I still prefer Louie Muellers in Taylor.
Yes. Yes it is. I went when they were in a trailer. I'd get there 30 minutes before open and I'd be 10th in line. At open, the line was 20-30 deep. This spring, in their new place I showed up 2 hours before open to save a spot for some out of town friends and I was third in line. At open, the line was over and hour.
Verdict: worth it. Brisket was fantastic. Moist, tender and full of flavor. No sauce needed. Pork. Sausage. All great.
I like Salt Lick also but Franklin is in a different league. I've eaten there at least a dozen times dating back to the trailer days. It's one of the few places I've been that consistently lives up to the hype.
Sorry, forgot to return with my report! It was phenomenal. I've had most of the famous BBQ Texas has to offer, and Franklin is right up there at the top. They open at 11:00am. First guy there today says he showed up at 8:45am. I arrived at 10:30am and was the 115th person in line. The 125th person didn't eat. They ran out of food. That's how it works--limited supply creates unparalleled demand.
