If you want a round that will go all the way through what ever you are shooting, the 147g or 168g FMJs are perfect as others have stated. If you are hunting with it, don't use that.

I have had great results from 165g Hornady SSTs. Good groups and great for deer. You mentioned that you reload. You can do a ladder test to get the perfect round for your rifle.

My pet load for my Savage Model 11 chambered in .308
    - 150 grain Sierra MatchKing HPBT
    - 42.6 grains of IMR 4895
    - Standard WIN LRP
    - Case shoulder bumped 0.002 during sizing

FYI, this load may not bust APC or MRAP's "like butter", but I can assure you it will take down a White Tail deer with ease at 200-300 yards if you do your part.

Shot groups approximately 0.7 MOA @ 100-yds with calm winds.
A seasoned shooter could hit a quarter taped to the board relatively consistently.

To the OP: What kind of shooting are you doing where you need to bust armor and such?
Why is that criteria a prerequisite? I would venture to answer that a .308 may not be the round you are seeking.

A .222 will take a white tail at 200 yds.
    I certainly hope that a .308 will....
I also said "with ease", lol.

Personally, I never tried it on game, but if the math works out you should be able to hit the animal out to 1000 with an 11- mil hold.

I'm seeing Winchester 147gr for $1.40 a round, Sellier & Bellot 1970s Military Surplus (Corrosive Brass) for $0.70 a round, and Tulammo Steel Case for $0.70. Anyone shooting steel case through their AR10? I'm not looking for match bullets so much as I am cheap range ammo for function checks.
I shoot the hell out of steel case ammo from my DPMS AR10. I’m all about the cheap ammo and fun shooting. Bet ya $1.00 that Tula will keep it on a pie plate at 500 yards if you do your job.
