Umpteen years ago, I spent a weekend on Taal while it was active...at least modestly active. We camped about 100 yards from a slow lava flow roughly 15 feet tall that crept constantly into the lake. You could vary the temp of the water if you went for a swim by how close you ventured toward the flow.

Thing that was a bit creepy is that Taal Lake fills an ancient caldera from the big eruption over 200,000 or so years ago. When you swim in it, you only need to be several feet from the shore before you have hundreds of feet of water beneath you. IIRC, the average depth is over 350 feet and the deepest point is nearly 600 feet. It's a wake-up call not knowing that and, when you feel the shelf drop off, you take a big breath and dive down to see how deep it is at that point. Only to later find out that you were head-down trying to see how deep 600 feet is.
