My magnet helps me find the critical temperature in my steel, so I know when to quench the blade for a good heat treat. It's also useful for recovering dropped pieces of steel from behind the workbench.
I bought a fishing magnet and rope, slim picking around here. I think around a dock or pier would be better. Of course you never know what is tossed from a moving car along the bayou.
