I think those taps were to extend the time between resoles?

No, protected the heels not soles.

I've never had my shoes re-heeled without replacing the soles. My cowboy boots have been resoled so many times there isn't enough boot leather left to do it again

eta- dang it, brought up the cowboy boots to mention you have to be specific about the type of heel, some places will install a walking heel by default
