I've tried some. It's usually edible but bland.
Yep, that's why I can food (in jars). It won't last 20 years like the freeze dried stuff, but it's still delicious even after sitting on the shelf for over a year. It's stuff I actually eat so I have no issues rotating the stock.

Trick question. MREs are never good.
lol... I actually like a couple of the MRE flavors. I'm pissed I can never find any maple nut poundcake, tho!

Mountain House gets my vote in a pinch. For long-term planning, buy an inexpensive dehydrator and vacuum packer at Wally.

You can dry chicken, beef, pork, vegetables, and fruit.

Once it is dried, vacuum pack it and set it aside for some future emergency. Follow the instructions that come with the dehydrator and vacuum packer.

Be sure to have at least five gallons of water per person for thirty days.

Lack of water will kill you.

    Be well.

if you are going to dry meat in a dehydrator and vacuum seal it, you'd better make darn sure to get all of the moisture out first.
if you trap any moisture inside, you can start to grow things... bad things..

How long are mre's good for?

It is claimed they are good between 3 and 10 years depending on storage temps. But here is a recent youtube video that may show they can last much longer, even in less than ideal conditions.
