That could be a whole thread, right there. The number of shooting sports that push way past pointless in their pursuit of an arbitrary goal is seemingly infinite.I wouldn't want to waste my ammo just to say I've done it.
- How much did Boyer spend in money, time, and work to be named Benchrest Shooter of the Year so many times and dominate the Benchrest Hall of Fame?
- How many years did Ralf Schumann shoot 200K-400K rounds per year so he could dominate ISSF Rapid Fire Pistol and win all those Olympic gold medals?
- How many people pour all their excess income and all their free time into pistol shooting at a mile or rifle shooting at 2 miles, just to win accolades from the 100 or so people in the world that also do the same thing? (OK, yeah, it's more than 100, but still...)
- And in every other shooting sport, there are more examples.
To specifically address your comment, I have no idea why people spend so much ammo (and money and time) just to say they've done it, whatever it may be.
But we need those people. They show us what's possible and they push the boundaries of what we know in every field of human endeavor.
I don't have it in me to push like that but I certainly admire those who do.
