saw this in mens fitness june/july 2010 (wish i had a scanner)
    need:
    steaks approx 1.75"
    3/4 cup olive oil
    10 jalapeno peppers
    10 garlic cloves sliced thin
    3/4 cup cilantro

on an even level of coals (leave the front 1/3 of the grill free of coals) when coals are orange, fan them to blow off any ash.
season steaks w salt n pepper, then place steake directly on the coals
    4-6 minutes for med rare.
lift steaks out of coals and gently shake to dislodge any embers.
remove loose ash with basting brush, cover while preparing sauce.
heat the olive oil in a cast iron skillet, when hot add jals, garlic, and cilantro. cook on high till jals and garlic begin to brown, 2 mins or so. pour sauce over steaks.

    lemme know how it is

First, don't trim any fat off of the steaks. Fat will keep it from burning. Second, 4-6 minutes is ok IF you flip them over halfway through. But if you want to cook it medium well or well, you need to finish up in the oven or skillet.

It works, I actually watched Alton Brown or whatever his name is on the Food Network cook fajita meat that way, actually keeps it from flaring up too,

Sounds like a good way to screw up some excellent T-Bones. With all that other stuff, you can't taste the meat. Personally, I would take everything except the steak and throw it in blender with a little lime and nmake salsa on the side.

When you cook alot of those things the flavors are dulled down quite a bit. You don't taste alot of the onion or pepper in fajitas if you cook them along side.
