As always, my personal range is a work in progress. The indigenous soil is a heavy clay that turns to fine powder from foot traffic. Aside from being a nuisance, this makes brass retrieval difficult. Besides concrete, is there a base aggregate that works well for dry conditions without powdering and allows for easy brass scavenging?

Side note. The utility company just cleared right of way across my place. 50' wide with single pole line on center. My rifle range just got relocated. : )
500+ yd just got real easy.

    Pee gravel?

I know the brass could get mixed in if it was walked over but shouldn't be too hard to find.

    Another option that's cheaper.

If there is a cement company nearby that runs trucks you may be able to get the wash out from the drums(or whatever you call the spinning part on the back).

It takes a while to settle and pack in, ESP without rain, but when it does it makes a nice packed surface and doesn't get muddy.

If you don't want to pour a a concrete slap, a hole filled with small gravel would work.

I used to lay out a big tarp when I shot. It was a PITA but it worked. You can't leave it out though or the weather will kill it.

I was thinking pea gravel for a more permanent solution.

if no concrete due to cost you could try pricing out asphalt, if someone is getting a driveway done near you soon you could get it real cheap..

Asphalt millings and decomposed granite both would work well. An afternoon with a walk behind compactor and water hose turns decomp granite hard as a rock. Granite runs ~$75 per yard, at 3" thick will cover 100 square feet.

This sounds good. I'll research it.
